Conventional vs. Alternative Septic Systems
A conventional septic system pairs a buried tank with a drain field, also called a leach field. Wastewater flows into the tank, solids settle to the bottom, and the clarified liquid exits into perforated pipes buried in the drain field, where it filters slowly through the soil. This is the most common setup for California properties with suitable soil.
Not every property qualifies. A site evaluation performed by a qualified professional examines soil conditions, local topography, and nearby surface water to determine what your land can support. Where a conventional drain field isn’t an option, a non-standard OWTS uses an alternative treatment method to produce effluent of equal or better quality. These systems are more complex and typically cost more, but they make installation possible on sites that would otherwise be ineligible.
